How to Fix a Noisy Garage Door

noisy garage door

Garage doors can often create loud noises which wake up your family and even your entire neighborhood. How do you get rid of that screeching and grinding that happens when you open up your garage door?

Here are a few simple fixes you can do to help reduce the noise while also improving the performance of your garage door.

Tighten any loose nuts or bolts

Most noisy garage doors can be fixed by simply tightening any loose nuts or bolts. All it takes is a wrench and a few minutes to spare ensuring that your garage door is secure. Inspect your garage door carefully to ensure that the bolts and nuts on your system are not loose.

Don’t over tighten, this could lead to the bolts becoming stripped or causing damage to the rest of the system. Tightening them until they are snug against the hinge is enough for them to function as they should without coming loose.

Replace faulty rollers

Garage door rollers could also be the source of the noise. Inspect them by rolling them back and forth on the track yourself or inspect them as you open up the garage door. If you notice any sticking, lubricate garage door rollers by using WD-40.

If there are any broken rollers or some that are leaning, they will need to be replaced. Replacing the garage door rollers on your own could be dangerous and could be costly. Most rollers available at stores today are not of the highest quality, which might cause further problems down the road.

Contact a professional garage door technician to ensure that the job is done correctly and that you don’t put yourself in harm’s way.

Inspect the hinges

When hinges wear out, they can often cause screeching and grinding to occur as you open and close your garage door. If you notice that the noise is coming from only a few hinges, a simple application of WD-40 is often all it takes to help eliminate the noise.

However, ensure that you inspect all of the hinges of your door in order to make sure that everything is working as it should be. If you notice cracking or broken hinges, make sure to take note. Cracked or broken hinges can pose a safety risk and need to be replaced so make sure to contact a professional if you need to have it replaced.

Check your garage door opener

If your garage door opener’s motor is loud, this might be a sign that you need to replace it with a newer model. A weak motor often struggles to work correctly, and while you could continue using your system it will eventually stop working.

Replacing it with a newer model such as a belt drive operator will help improve your experience. Belt drive operators offer a quieter and more durable experience in comparison to traditional metal chain operators.

Unfortunately, most garage door opener fixes are difficult to do if you have no experience. It’s highly recommended that you contact a professional garage door repair technician who will be able to help get your system to work without problem.
